Huawei Innovation
Designing major elements of the third mobile OS after iOS and Android through design thinking and strategy, I built product features as part of a global mobile OS concept. My work is part of EMUI, which is in use by 580 million people.
Company
Huawei is a global leader in connectivity-based technologies and hardware, as well as offering powerful, top-tier mobile devices.
Challenge
Huawei admittedly acknowledged its Android-based EMUI mobile OS was a confusing hyrbid of Apple’s iOS and Google’s interaction and visual design languages. Our U.S.-based product design team was challenged to look at innovating mobile user behavior from the ground up. I focused on everything from profile creation to basic system-level interactions to the role of popular third party apps—and helped create an A.I.-driven OS of the future.
Work Description
I led research and audit activities of EMUI, and developed product strategy for an ownable, intelligent feed of user insights as a default OS experience. With this context, I created prototypes and concepts for intelligent A.I. based OS product features.
Results
Our work was presented and accepted by the product leadership and engineering teams at HQ. Product concepts or phased versions of them have been spread across multiple releases. Our work is laying the groundwork for what’s next for this third, global mobile OS.

System Design / Design Thinking Over a period of 8 months, we built an at-a-glance, dynamic insights on one side of the office. From strategy to persons to product features to machine learning, we kept our focus on a system view.
Interaction Design Explorations of different dynamic content and interaction. People want choices and don’t always view content the same way.
Data-driven Content Strategy Native and 3rd party mini “card” explorations make a user feed more personalized, and relevant—based on A.I. detecting content choices and behavior patterns.
Design Strategy A.I. integrations must follow tenets to be desirable to people: 1) never take control away 2) always be adjustable 3) provide value and 4) think ahead. Strategic insights grounded all product experience choices in real data.
User-centered Design / Design Strategy A user profile dynamically changes over time based on interests and tastes. In support of this, system thinking identified the right mix of manual user input vs. automated/A.I. input — creating an active hybrid model focused on accuracy.
